From the Rector.....

ANNUAL GENERAL VESTRY

The AGM took place on Monday 12th April and this year was appointed not only four churchwardens (2 in St Patrick’s and 2 in St John’s), two glebewardens and twelve members of the Select Vestry, but also the election of two Diocesan Synodsmen and Parochial Nominators (elected triennially). Elsewhere in this list you will find among the Parish Directory the names of those elected to serve the Parish and we wish them well as they strive to carry out the responsible duties of their office. We extend our thanks to all who have served the Parish in this way over the past year and triennial period.

ST JOHN’S

Finally major restoration work on St John’s has begun. At present inside it is an empty shell with scaffolding surrounding the tower and spire. It will take some months to complete. In the mean time I would ask you to come along and support if you can the various fund raising activities organised by the Restoration Committee and which are planned for the summer, among them an evening at Coleman’s Garden Centre. Details of these can be found in the section, Donegore Restoration News further on in this issue. Please make a date in your diary.

DRUMCREE

For nearly half a decade now our Province has been affected by the controversy and violence that has surrounded the Drumcree stand off. As July nears there is a noticeable tension in the air as the prospect of more trouble, bad feeling and disagreement looms.

As a church committed to peace and reconciliation among all Christians let us remember in our prayers at this time our land, its people, the security forces, all peace keepers and peacemakers, the communities and individuals involved in negotiations and pray that there may be a resolution to this conflict and a settlement for the sake of peace.

WEDNESDAY MORNING COMMUNION

During July and August the Wednesday morning service of Holy Communion with intercession for the sick will stop and resume again in September. Many of those who attend, and the numbers are increasing, have said how much they value this quiet time in the middle of the week and the opportunity to say their prayers for sick friends and relatives. There is a very tangible atmosphere of prayer which pervades our celebration on that day. Do come along in September and join in the fellowship. We always delight in seeing new faces.

AND FINALLY...

May I take this opportunity to wish all of you who are going away to holiday elsewhere a safe journey there and back and to all parishioners a relaxing, refreshing and peaceful summer.

In Christ, Stephen Fielding.

Bowling Club
bowler.gif (1418 bytes)On Friday 7th May, 1999, we had our AGM. in the Parish Hall with a good turn out of members.

We welcome the Committee elected and we are looking forward to the start of the new season in September, 1999. All new comers will be most welcome.

On Saturday 21st August 1999, the Bowling Club and Friends will travel by Coach to Dunluce Outdoor Bowling Club for a few hours bowling with a meal to follow afterwards in a local hotel.

Isobel McCollam (Hon. Sec.)

Ladies Fellowship
This year’s varied programme ended in May with the parishioners and guests visiting The Corrymeela Centre, outside Ballycastle. A most enjoyable supper was provided by the ladies of Ramoan Parish.

The fund raising event in April with ‘Gaslight’ was a great success. We extend a big thank you to those who supported it in any way.

Dates for your diary:-

  • 21 September 1999 It is customary to begin the new year with a communion service in St Patrick’s Church. It is at 8pm followed by supper in the Church Rooms.
  • 3 October 1999 Harvest Luncheon in Parish Hall following the morning Harvest Festival Service.
  • 15 October 1999 The Ladies Fellowship in conjunction with St John’s, Donegore Restoration Committee are hosting ‘The RUC’ Male Voice Choir" in the Parish Hall. Tickets will be available from August from members.
  • 19 October 1999 Monthly meeting. Programme to be confirmed.

Thank you to all members who supported the Fellowship throughout the year. We look forward to welcoming any new faces in September!

Ann Jones (Hon. Sec.)

Choir
choir2.gif (1761 bytes)On the 13th June, at Morning Prayer, Lauren Brady became a full member of the Parish Choir and received her surplice. We have three girls in the Junior section of the choir and they all sing and contribute very well. There is one spare robe for a boy or girl at the moment though more could be provided!

On the 20h June the choir sang at Evening Prayer in Gartree Parish Church on the shores of Lough Neagh. The service is an annual Summer Festival, attended by many friends of the congregation and people associated with Langford Engineering Works. Many appreciative comments were heard afterwards, both about the singing and the robes.

During the summer months our members are fewer than usual, but I know that members are present unless on a holiday and I greatly appreciate all the help and support of the choir.

Ramblers
ramblers.gif (2047 bytes)The May outing, proposed last time, did not take place, unfortunately, and June took us on a twosome walking holiday.

My comments in the last magazine - you did read it - still apply; I hope everyone is still interested.

We could do a walk in July - my preference would be for an alternative 12th but the wise owl suggests the 13th. A notice will be posted shortly in the church.

Perhaps we can also make firm plans for August and September: September
could be a good time for a week-end trip to Iona.

St. John's Restoration News
Work has now begun at St John’s, Donegore and will be ongoing for some months to come. As a result services are being held in St Patrick’s on the usual Sundays (2nd & 4th)

We are fortunate in having further grant assistance from The Pilgrim Trust, The Esmé Mitchell Fund and The Beresford Fund. This is all thanks to Margaret Bell’s tireless form filling and answering of queries. However there is still plenty left for the Parish to raise.

A Finance Sub-Committee of the Select Vestry has been constituted to examine ways in which to go about raising funds for the restoration of St John’s and to increase giving to general Church funds. You will hearing more from them in the early autumn and about the proposed Gift Day for St John’s in October.

The Archbishop of Armagh and The Bishop of Connor have both kindly accepted to be Patrons of the Restoration Appeal. We are most encouraged in having their names behind us.

UP-COMING FUND RAISING EVENTS

A ‘Summer’ evening at Colemans Nursery with a Demonstration and Talk is on Tuesday 27th July at 8p.m. This will also include a Wine & Cheese plus Ballot.

A Treasure Hunt is organised for Saturday 28th August .

A Craft Fair to be held in the Parish Hall on Saturday 20th November.

Michael Cooke (Hon. Sec. Restoration Committee)

The Internet - Parish Web Pages
This is the time of year when some manage to travel and experience new places. However, there are many interesting places that can be visited from the comfort of your own home. The following links are all worth a visit and are interesting in both their Web design and their content.
Parkminster Monastery
Farnborough Abbey
L'Ordre des Chartreux

The Parish Magazine refers to the Church of Ireland Code of Good Practice for Ministry with Children - Safeguarding Trust. I have made this available on our Website.

There may be disruptions to normal service in the next months as I am changing the program that I use to create and maintain these pages. It should be a transparent change; but I cannot anticipate the various combinations of browsers and settings that you use so please let me know of any problems.

With the way that the pages are organised if any organisation wants to have there own page for news or perhaps artwork, all I need is the material to publish.

Corrymeela

corrymeela.gif (1118 bytes)

As a friend of Corrymeela and a member of a cellgroup for some years, I was delighted to accompany the Ladies Fellowship members, members’ friends, the Rector and parishioners on a visit to The Corrymeela Community Centre at Ballycastle.

The Corrymeela Centre was founded in 1965. The first leader was the Rev. Ray Davey followed by the Rev. John Morrow. The present leader is the Rev. Trevor Williams.

There are 180 members of the community scattered all over Ireland and beyond. They carry on with the work of Corrymeela wherever they work or live. Throughout Ireland there is a network of more than 1000 ‘Friends of Corrymeela’ and several local support groups for study, worship, mutual support and fellowship. Groups sometimes become involved in local projects in response to Christ’s call to Christians to be peacemakers.

Corrymeela operates in three centres: Ballycastle; Knocklayd and Belfast. The new house in Ballycastle was dedicated by HRH The Prince of Wales in June 1998. The Ballycastle/ Knocklayd centres welcome around 7,000 men, women and children for short residential stays each year. They come from church, school, community, youth and family groups. Christian education programmes explore the connections between Christian faith and contemporary social and political issues, encouraging understanding of different church traditions. Corrymeela believes that reconciliation is at the heart of the Gospel.

The centres are operated by a combination of long term staff and short term volunteers. Each year 12 young volunteers are chosen to work on the Ballycastle site. They come from Northern Ireland, Ireland, other parts of the U.K. and all over the world..

The visiting group from the Parish was shown round the stub by Mary-Ann and Chris Busch, mature volunteers from the U.S.A. coming to the end of a busy successful year working as facilitators.

I was introduced to Corrymeela by a community member, a personal friend who asked me to help at a family week. I feel my life has been enriched by the vision and experience of Corrymeela.
