Dear Friends,

St John's, Donegore
Sunday 12th March was as you know the first Sunday we have been able to worship in St John's again since the completion of restoration a short time ago. While the restoration is complete but for a few ends which have to be tied up, the process of fund raising goes on as we seek to pay for this beautifully restored church. The service of re-hallowing will take place by the Bishop of Connor on May 25th at 8.00pm and more details on that event will follow.

A number of people from the church, representatives from the Select Vestry, have been involved with our architect in seeing that the work was carried out. For their enthusiasm and devotion to the task I want to thank: Mrs Margaret Bell, Mrs Mavis Coe, Mr Stanley Clendinning and Miss Yvonne Hutchinson. Many others have also contributed in so many practical ways not least those of you who have contributed so generously to the Restoration Fund and those serving on the Restoration Committee. These folk deserve much credit for seeing the process through along with the Select Vestry who had the wisdom and foresight to see that 'now was the time' and seized the opportunity.

While Sunday 12th March wasn't a formal service of thanksgiving and re-hallowing we do thank God for the successful completion of restoration and for the opportunity of worshipping in this ancient church once more and pray for a renewed vision of our work and witness from here.

Memory Box
We took the opportunity at Choral Evensong at St John's in March, to receive the Memory Box for safe keeping. The Memory Box is the result of a joint community effort involving representatives from local church denominations.

The idea of forming the group and the person who took the initiative was Mrs Amy Montgomery. Both she and the band of willing workers are to be commended for the fruits of their labours in producing this box, the Millennium Booklet (on sale at £4) and for arranging the staging of the informative exhibition in the Templeton Hotel, which in fact sponsored the making of the box.

The box contains information in ten time capsules from local churches, community groups & Templepatrick Primary School and we are privileged to act as keeper of the box until 50 years hence when it will once again be opened.

I think it has been a good exercise in bringing the various parts of the community together seen particularly at the launch of the exhibition a few weeks ago when guests from all around attended a very enjoyable evening. I'm sure that this exercise has served to strengthen the link between our churches and the common bond of unity that we all share in Christ, the church's one foundation.

We thank God for the bonds of friendship that have been nourished and created through this millennium project and for the opportunities of service that it has brought to any and all who were involved in it. So may the memories of the past and reflections on the present contained in it bring to future generations a sense of their of heritage, community and belonging and be an encouragement to them of what can be done in the spirit of co-operation and friendship.

Holy Week & Easter Services
A service of Holy Communion is being held at 10am from Monday to Wednesday when accounts of the Passion are read from the different gospels. On Maundy Thursday at 7.30am we will hold an early morning Eucharist to enable those who are working during the day to attend at least one service during Holy Week should the evenings prove difficult. Hopefully this will fit in with travel arrangements for those travelling to work that morning. The service will last 20 minutes.

Good Friday services are noted in the calendar, the morning one being at 11.00am. It takes the form of an All Age Worship service. Lastly, there will be a special Easter Vigil at 9pm on Easter Eve when the Paschal / Easter candle for 2000A.D. will be lit to mark our Lord's 'passing-over' from death to life.

Exams
May and June are months of revision and examinations for those unfortunate souls at school or university, so, wherever you happen to be studying be assured of our prayerful thoughts.

Baptisms & Marriages
These are arranged in consultation with the Rector. Please have a word with me before making any other arrangements

E-mail addresses and the internet
Our webmaster Alan Walbridge has put together a fine web-site for the parish (see www.walbridge.u-net.com/church. He would welcome contributions from our organisations since each of you now has the facility here to put relevant information onto a home page on the site.

Many of you now have e-mail and there is a burgeoning interest in this form of communication. Those of you with an e-mail address(es) may like to contribute this to a Parish E-mail Directory which we hope to set up soon. It would have restricted access via a password to those people who will contribute to the directory. Please send an e-mail to Alan at alan@walbridge.u-net.com or to myself at the new parish e-mail address templepatrick@connor.anglican.org which is telling us you'd like to be included in this venture.

If you can, include your 'snail mail' address and phone number too. Indeed if you're a past Parishioner and have had links with us in the past, please apply for inclusion! There may be friends who'd like to keep in touch. We are all part of the wider church family.

The Lutheran Church of Sweden Link
On the Parish's behalf I am exploring a companionship link with the Church of Sweden. The Diocese of Connor is now twinned with the Swedish Diocese of Linkoping and the parish we will be exploring links with the parish of Vastervik.

This link may involve exchange visits between our two parishes, also a prayer link and may run for three years initially, with a review at the end of those three years. I'd be glad to hear from anyone who is interested in forming this link and for any ideas you may have to further the link too.

Sometime soon I would envisage appointing a layman or woman as co-ordinator and link person for our parish. Give it some thought.

The Easter Vestry
Otherwise known as the General Vestry, this is the Parish's A.G.M. If you are a registered Vestryperson (see list in the church porch if you are unsure) you are entitled to come along and vote for the various officers who are elected at that meeting. Namely, 2 People's Churchwardens (for Templepatrick and Donegore); a People's Glebewarden and not more than 12 other persons elected by the registered Vestrymen.

This year's meeting is on
THURSDAY 4TH MAY 2000 AT 8.00 p.m. in the
MINOR HALL.

'Millennium Keepsake'
Finally, a copy of St Mark's Gospel is being distributed to every home in the Parish as a gift to you from your Parish to commemorate two thousand years of Christian history. An apt gesture on the Select Vestry's behalf in this year 2000.

May you continue to keep a holy Lent and when it comes around, a Happy Easter to everyone! Your friend and Rector,

Stephen Fielding

Bowling Club
bowler.gif (1418 bytes)
The Bowling Club continues to meet on Friday from 7.30pm to 10.30pm and Monday from 8pm to 9.30pm.

Since the last magazine we have had our Christmas Party night. The winner on the evening won a turkey, others received runners-up prizes and there was a visit from our resident Santa.

As mentioned in an earlier magazine we purchased two new bowling mats which have tried and tested all our bowling skills. On Friday 21st January we had a ladies and gents millennium Singles competition, the winners receiving a pair of Tyrone Crystal candlesticks each. On Tuesday 22nd February we had a return visit from Barnbrak to the Parish Hall which was once again well supported and a successful evening.

The Bowling Club deeply regrets the passing of James McCall, Honorary Life Member of the Club and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family.

On Friday 14th April the Club will be having our Annual Easter Egg Competition and on Wednesday 26th April we'll be making our annual visit to the Baker Stadium for two hours of bowling followed by supper at the Stadium. Our A.G.M. will be held on Friday 5th May at 7.30pm in the Minor Hall at which we will have the Presentation of Prizes.

Isobel McCollam (Hon. Sec.)

Choir News
choir2.gif (1761 bytes)The Choir sang Evensong in St John's, Donegore on 12th March, the Sunday on which the church reopened after major restoration. We look forward to a service of re-hallowing on May 25th. Practices are on-going for Lent, Holy Week and Easter-tide. After Easter we prepare for the annual Ascension Day service, when choirs from around the neighbouring Rural Deaneries unite to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension and sing Evensong. While I was on holiday, the Rector introduces the choir to Plainsong and we hope to sing Compline at one of the weeknight Lenten Services. We have an enthusiastic and already very popular new choir members: Claudia Stubington and Milo MacKean. They are most welcome and we hope they will enjoy singing in the choir with us. Good wishes.

Mildred

St. John's Restoration News

St John's Restoration Committee You will know that the work of restoration is almost complete and that St John's re-opened for worship on 12th March. Some minor work is still to be completed but the results of the restoration are clearly evident and very pleasing.

The final account is still awaited from the building contractor. It is this which will determine how much remains to be raised towards the cost of the restoration work.

The dinner and entertainment evening organised by Mrs Betty Campbell and her helpers in the Parish Hall proved a great success. Our thanks go to all who helped with and supported this novel and enjoyable evening. The Abbey singers, who provided and memorable evening for us last year, returned to the Parish Hall on 27 March.

Looking forward to the summer, Coleman's Nurseries have again generously offered the opportunity for an event during the summer. Our Garden Party last year was a tremendous success and the Committee is currently considering the format for this year. Thank you again to all who have so generously helped to make the restoration of St John's a reality. Please take the opportunity to view the completed work.

Best Wishes,

Christopher Lundy (Chairman)

(Services in St John's are on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 10.00a.m.)

A further word of thanks!

Our thanks go to Mr Shane MacKean and Mr Harold Dawkins for storing church furnishings during the restoration, to Mrs P.MacKean for providing transport and to those who helped on the Saturday to move all the furniture back in again- the Rector, Ronnie Barnes, Michael Cooke, Nicholas Graham, Chris Lundy, David Mawhinney and Norman Shirley. Thanks also to Harold Dawkins and Brian McMeekin for their ever willing assistance at all times.

Ballot Prize Winners

  • Adam the Gardener - Mr Haffey of Benburb
  • Stakis Vouchers - Mrs M. Oliver, Londonderry
  • Runners-up - Mrs Evans, Randalstown, Rachel Brolly, Parkgate

Jokes?

Newreader: "Two prisoners escaped today. One is seven feet tall ant the other is four foot two inches. Police are looking high and low for them."

Escaped prisoner: "I'm free! I'm free!
Little boy: "So what, I'm four."

Ladies Fellowship

The Ladies Fellowship has been very busy in the first three months of the millennium.

Members took part in the planting of a red chestnut specimen in the Millennium Copse at Wallace Park, Templepatrick on 22 January. At the January meeting members agreed the items of information to be included in the time capsule which was placed in the Memory Box to be housed in St John's, Donegore. To commemorate the Millennium the Ladies Fellowship decided to present St Patrick's with a complete set of communion linen which will be dedicated at the Parish Eucharist Eucharist on Palm Sunday, 16 April at 11.30am.

As is customary, members and other Parishioners kindly supplied the catering requirements for the Pre-Lenten Lunch in aid of the Bishops' Appeal. A big 'thank you' to all those persons involved in any way.

Dates for your diary:-
11 April A.G.M.
Please note amended date. The AGM which includes the election of new officers takes place, followed by member Eileen Smyth giving a talk with slides on 'Visiting the in-laws in Brazil'. Members please make every effort to attend.

16 May Annual Outing.
This year to Hillsborough Castle and Gardens. Supper is being provided by the local Parish, St Malachy's. The coach is leaving the Parish Hall at 6.00pm sharp. Guests are most welcome. If interested please contact Molly Finlay (Tel: 432342) or myself (Tel: 432676)

May I take this opportunity on behalf of the members to thank Molly Finlay for all her hard work and dedication which she has contributed to the group in her capacity as President. Molly's term of office expires at the end of May.

Wishing all members a pleasant break until meetings resume in September.

Ann Jones (Hon. Sec.)

The Ramblers

Once again St. Patrick seemed to have turned the stone for the pilgrims who left for the North Coast on 17th March. The two hour walk took twenty walkers round the coast from Portballintrae and back for a very hearty lunch provided by the cottage cooks in the seaside home of Reggie and Amy Montgomery. A small surcharge was made in aid of St. John's Restoration Fund and well over £100 was raised through that exercise. Thanks to all who made that day what it was - very enjoyable.

Two of our regular members, Margaret and Alan Walbridge, will be going for a walk in the Mournes on Saturday June 10th and would welcome any who feel up to it to accompany them. The walk will be about 4-5 hours including a stop for a picnic lunch that will have to be provided and carried. Suitable boots and waterproofs would also be required. The party would be leaving at about 9.30 am and should be home by 5.00 pm. If you are interested, give them a ring on 9443 2795.

1st Templepatrick Scout Group

At our January Group Committee meeting we were sorry to receive Willy McDowell's resignation as Group Scout Leader. Willy has served as a leader in Templepatrick for more than 25 years and has recently been involved in helping the new Scout leaders, who have now received their warrants. He will be greatly missed, and our thanks go to him and his wife Nan for all the work and time they have devoted to our youth. We won't be letting them lose touch entirely but wish them a happy 'Scout Retirement'. Catherine Michael has agreed to become acting Group Scout Leader until we have a leadership review.

We would like to welcome our new Scout leaders Andrew Cunningham and Thomas Finn and wish them a happy and enjoyable future with the group.

On 22 January we joined the Millennium Tree Planting in Wallace Park when each of organisations planted a tree, four in all. A totem pole was beautifully carved by Fred Dundee from Glengormley on our behalf and kindly erected by Antrim Borough Council. We feel this is an excellent Millennium contribution to our Park and have received lots of favourable comments. Our group also donated photographs and a Group scarf to the Memory Box Time Capsule to be stored in St John's, Donegore.

By the time the magazine comes out our Annual Coffee Morning and Bring and Buy Sale will have taken place. May we take this opportunity to thank all those who helped in any way or made donations.

A Country Antrim Millennium Camp will take place on the weekend beginning 26th May to coincide with Scout Camps all over the British Isles. It is hoped that our Cubs and Scouts will take part, with Beavers spending Saturday afternoon and evening visiting the camp at Shane's Castle.

Catherine Michael (Acting Group Scout Leader)

The Internet - Parish Web Pageshttp://www.walbridge.u-net.com/

The main users of the internet appear to be the younger amongst us. This is probably due to access, but government initiatives and developments in television should soon widen this access. The pathways and roads around Templepatrick show that cable is on its way. Our organisation with the youngest members, the Rainbows, have received enquiries from England whilst for the Brownies it is America. Nothing yet for the older members of the community but I'm sure that if you went searching you would soon find like minded spirits throughout the world.

It is not difficult to find things, a search engine spends it life wandering around the millions of sites in the world noting their content. Ask it for something and it will tell you where it has found it. There are many such search engines but my favourite at the moment is Google. You will find it at http://www.google.com/

The Links page of our site has a link to the Religious Education Exchange Service, but there is now another website to support the teaching of religious education in Northern Ireland and is well worth a look at. Its URL is http://www.faithinschools.org/ St. Patrick's in Coleraine have just set up a website and would like you to have a look. You will find them at http://www.stpats.co.uk/ (Incidentally although I keep giving the full URL, those of you with version 4 browsers should be able to omit the http://)

Finally a site well worth a look is MONO* Crafts' awesome demonstration of Flash's potential. A must see! No instructions, but move your mouse about. You can find it at http://www.yugop.com/
