Dear Friends, Advent The new term is well underway and
we are planning ahead in the weeks that bring us into the solemn season
of Advent when we will once again mark the Sundays of Advent, each with
its own special emphasis, by the lighting of candles on our Advent wreath.
A special service of Readings and Music for the beginning of Advent is
scheduled for the 11.30am service in St Patrick's on 3rd December the
first Sunday of the church's year. Advent which means 'coming' prepares
us for the advent of Christ as we look back to the historic event of his
birth and recall it in our celebrations at Christmas and forward to his
coming again in glory. |

New hymnbooks & Sweden! On November 19th we begin to use our new Church of Ireland hymnal. At that service music edition hymnals will be dedicated in memory of the late Clifford Forsythe, former choir member. Coincidentally and appropriately it is the Sunday nearest to St Cecilia's Day, patron saint of music. Anyone who'd like to purchase a hymnbook for themselves and help the parish meet the cost of the new hymnals please contact Mrs Margaret Bell Tel:028 90833300. On the weekend of 17th-19th of November we will have our first visit from our link parish of Vastervik, in Sweden when some members of the parish including the assistant pastor Gunnar Karlquist will join us for worship that Sunday. We hope there will be an opportunity to meet with our visitors over coffee following the morning service. Kindly Mr Stephen Laird, former churchwarden at Templepatrick, has agreed to act as lay representative from the Parish here in organising and building relations between our two congregations. I thank him for that on behalf of us all. Adverts I am grateful to those who have supported the production of the printed magazine by placing advertisements in it. |
Rural Deanery Our parish is part of Antrim Rural Deanery. Each Diocese in the Church of Ireland is divided into areas called Rural Deaneries. The parishes in our Deanery are Muckamore, Connor, Kilbride, Killead,Randalstown, Antrim and ourselves. The clergy of the Deanery have organised various events in the coming months to foster more contact and fellowship between our parishes in order to give us a wider perspective on the 'church' in our area. There will be opportunities to visit each others churches,as there was in September at a joint 'Songs of Praise'in Kilbride, to collaborate on marriage preparation as in February 2001, when we will be running a joint course at the Clotworthy Arts Centre, and looking forward to Lent, a series of Lenten services in the various churches will be taking place. More on that later. Generally In the weeks approaching
Christmas a number of special services have been arranged as you will
see from the Calendar. Your presence at these will encourage our Sunday
School members and leaders and our Choir in their work of enriching our
worship. I know there are a thousand things one could be doing in the
run up to Christmas so why not make attendance at church one of them and
remember the reason for the season. The worship and praise we offer to
God is the apt response of creature to Creator in view of the many blessings
we have to be thankful for. |

Bowling
Club We started the new season with four new members and an additional new mat. To start off our bowling season on Saturday 26th August, 2000, 27 members and friends travelled to Dunluce bowling club stopping at the holiday home of Amy and Reggie Montgomery for afternoon tea and coffee. Our sincere thanks to them for a lovely afternoon. We the proceeded to Dunluce Bowling Club and enjoyed three hours of outdoor bowling. Afterwards we had an evening meal in the Causeway Hotel and travelled home by coach. Our next outing is to Donegal in October for a two day break where we will enjoy bowling in the hotel. Isobel McCollam (Hon. Sec.) St. John's Restoration News While the summer was a quiet time for most organisations, fund raising for the restoration of St John's went on with a summer night out at Coleman's Nursery in July and a Treasure Hunt in August. Once again our appreciation goes to all who helped with and supported these events which raised over £1000. The work of finalising the account for the work of restoration continues. From this we will know the balance of monies outstanding, which will enable the Restoration Committee and Select vestry to lay plans for raising the final amount. Once again we are organising Santa's visits to Coleman's Garden Centre. He hopes to be there from 2pm until 5pm on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons in December, finishing on Saturday 23rd. We would like to purchase a Santa outfit; anyone with any suggestions please contact any of the committee members.

The
Internet - Parish Web Pages Yes, we appear to have moved again! After years wandering in the world wide wilderness we have finally found a permanent home, or more correctly an address. The pages that you read all live on a computer (server) somewhere and the address points to where it is. Up until the present the computer has been one that I subscribe to and the address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator) reflected this. Now the parish has its own URL. The clever thing is that whilst the URL will not change over the years, the server to which it refers may. It is as if it a postal address is specific to a letterbox rather than the door it is in. Move the letterbox to another door and it still receives all the mail addressed to it. You may have heard of people paying fortunes for a special URL, just as some do for personalised number-plates. Having your personalised URL makes it easy for people to remember and just as importantly guess. Surprisingly many find sites by guessing URLs rather than using a search engine as I described in the last magazine. Hopefully in time more and more churches will register their sites with this body. It will then be possible to guess the address of a church site, throughout the world. For example no prizes for guessing what is to be found at drogheda.armagh.anglican.org or at fahan.raphoe.anglican.org We are in at the beginning of this development and thanks are due to the select vestry. I will keep both sites going for a while, then eventually close the previous site - so as with the new telephone numbers, change your bookmarks now. The old address will work for a while then cease.
