Bowling
Club Since the last magazine we have had our Christmas party night with a visit from our 'resident' Santa. The winner of the evening won a turkey with others winning runner-up prizes. Early in February we were invited to Massereene bowling club in their new club house. The result being in our favour. We are now looking forward
to our second visit this season to the Baker Stadium.
Isobel McCollam (Hon. Sec.) Proceeds of
the Christmas music in St John's were £690. This was shared equally between
the Restoration Fund and the USPCA. Winners of the ballot were;
Many thanks to all who helped in these activities.
We are having a busy and successful year so far with approximately 67 boys in the group. The leader situation has improved with the help of parents Alan Martin for Cubs and Emma Foster for Beavers taking warrants. The Scout leadership remains vacant and Scouts are meeting once per fortnight taken by present warranted leaders from the Group and District help. We are endeavouring to find a new Scout leader urgently.
We now have 28 Beavers with a waiting list
and 3 leaders and 2 helpers. Beavers also have a busy program with a swim
night, a visit to W5 and Beaver Rally Day coming up.

School is now "rolling" towards Easter!! We shall be discussing
Lent and finding out what its all about. We will be discovering what
each person is giving up - but more importantly - will we be able to
stick to our pledges?? An especially difficult task for young children!! .Gail & Emma The Ladies Fellowship continues
to meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month in the Minor Hall at 8.00pm.
Attendance has been very encouraging so far, however we would love the
opportunity to welcome new members at any of our meetings.
We are at present arranging our outing to St Patrick's Centre and Cathedral, Downpatrick on Saturday 18 May - if you are interested in joining us please contact Ruth or myself. Leah Lynas (Hon.Sec.)
The study book that we're using in Lent this year is 'Journey into the desert' by Susan Sayers. It is reflection and meditation for lent being suitable for both personal and group use. Published by Kevin Mayhew ISBN 1840038322 If you have read a book recently that you think other may like to read and which comes under the broad umbrella of, religin, church and faith then please drop the editor a note about it. |

As you know, we have a link with the Parish of Vasterviik in Sweden. A party of around 10-15 of their clergy and laypeople are coming to visit us over the Whit weekend in May (Friday 17th to Monday 20th). We intend to look after them just as well as they did us when we visited Sweden last year. We are in the midst of planning an action-packed weekend for them, including at least one opportunity to meet as many of our parishioners as possible. Details will follow in due course. At this stage, however, I'm simply looking for volunteers to put up some of our guests for the three nights that they're here. This is a great opportunity to meet and learn from fellow Christians from another country, most of whom speak embarrassingly-good English! If you feel able to help in this way, please call me on 028 9082 5955. Thank you. Steve Laird
In accordance with the recommendations in 'Safeguarding Trust - The Church of Ireland Code of Good Practice for Ministry with Children', a Parish Panel has been appointed (operating since June 1998) to implement some of the responsibilities identified in the Code. The Panels responsibilities include:

The
Internet - Bluetooth I thought that with the Vikings coming it would be nice to be able to talk with them about something different, so how about one of their ancient kings, Bluetooth. This may seem out of place in a column supposed to be about the Internet, which was not too apparent in 940AD. King Harald Bluetooth, unlike
most other Vikings it appears, preferred talking to fighting. The important thing is that he unified the communication between different nations, he got them talking to each other. For us to get devices to talk to each other means wires, lots of wires if your computer is anything like mine. (We could have a competition for the parishioner with the most wires coming out of their computer!) But as the more mature readers will recall the radio used to be better known as the wireless. Communication happened without wires running from the transmitter to your home. So why not use this wire-less technology to remove the spaghetti from your workspace? This is what Bluetooth does. Based on a low-cost, short-range radio link, Bluetooth cuts the cords that used to tie up digital devices. When two Bluetooth equipped devices come within 10 meters range of each other, they can establish a connection together. Also because Bluetooth utilises a radio-based link, it doesn't require a line-of-sight connection in order to communicate. Your laptop could send information to a printer in the next room, or your microwave could send a message to your mobile phone telling you that your meal is ready. Gone will be the need to find the right cable, the right adapter and the right software to move data from one device to another. Instead, Bluetooth will let you shuffle data via wireless links as long as the devices are within 10 metres of each other. In the future, Bluetooth
is likely to be standard in tens of millions of mobile phones, PCs, laptops
and a whole range of other electronic devices. The possibilities opened
up really are limitless, and because the radio frequency used is globally
available, Bluetooth can offer fast and secure access to wireless connectivity
all over the world. The possibilities are countless. So if you are looking for something to talk about to our Viking visitors, why not mention Bluetooth? |
