Dear Friends,

The next three months each have a liturgical flavour of their own. In March Lent is ongoing, in April The Easter season will be upon us and in May we celebrate the Day of Pentecost followed by Trinity Sunday the following week. Action packed!

There is an old saying abroad that ‘Liturgists are an affliction sent to try the Church so that, when there is no overt persecution, the faithful may not be denied the merits of suffering’, said tongue firmly in cheek of course! In that regard during Lent matins is said daily at 9.15am and you are welcome to come along to St Patrick’s as part of your Lenten devotion to this ten minute service on any day bar Saturday. We are also enjoying the experience of worshipping in different churches in the Rural Deanery again this year as part of the Lenten Series ‘The Open Gate’ which has a Celtic flavour. Our turn is in St Patrick’s on 20th March at 7.30pm and will be followed by a cup tea in the Chruch Rooms. The series has been well supported thus far.

As we look to Holy Week, Palm Sunday will be celebrated with a Palm procession and the dramatic reading of the Passion narrative from St Matthew’s gospel. In Holy Week itself our service on the Thursday evening is unique in that we act out as it were the last supper, ‘on the night he was betrayed, he took bread...’. Jesus also washed the disciples’ feet and again this year volunteers will have their feet washed in an act of service to show that we should care for one another. Then at the end of the service the church is stripped of its Lenten array leaving it bare for Good Friday in imitation of the events of the Passion. On Good Friday there will be a quiet hour from 2-3pm and an evening service at 7.30pm. On Easter Day the Eucharist is celebrated at 10am in St John’s and 11.30am in St Patrick’s.

Parish Activites
Details of fund-raising activities are highlighted in this magazine. They inlcude the Bowlers Concert on 12 March, a Scout coffee morning on 23 March and a Fashion Show in the Dunadry Hotel & Country Club on 17 April and a Table Quiz on 24 May.

Sweden
Steve Laird’s letter carries more information on the proposed visit from our Swedish brothers and sisters on Whitweekend, 18-19 May. Our friends from Vastervik will be celebrating the Eucharist with us on the Sunday and there’ll be an opportunity to meet them afterwards over coffee. We look forward to this reciprocal visit and to renewing acquaintances formed during our Parish visit to them last May.

A.G.M.
The Easter General Vestry will meet in the Minor Hall on Monday 8 April at 8.00p.m. . An invitation is extended to all parishioners to attend. Only registered vestry members however may vote in the elections.

Internet
The Parish website is being entered in a Church of Ireland wide competition for best site. Our webmaster Alan Walbridge would very much welcome contributions of photos, other material etc from all and any of our organisations. Each organisation has a page set aside to display their own information. We hope this renewed appeal will bring a response and aid our chances in the competition. Thank you.

May you keep a Holy Lent and a blessed and Happy Easter to each one of you.

Yours sincerely,
Stephen Fielding

Bowling Club
bowler.gif (1418 bytes)
The bowling club continues to meet on Friday evening from 7.30 - 10.30pm and Monday from 8.00 - 9.30pm. new members would be made most welcome.

Since the last magazine we have had our Christmas party night with a visit from our 'resident' Santa. The winner of the evening won a turkey with others winning runner-up prizes.

Early in February we were invited to Massereene bowling club in their new club house. The result being in our favour.

We are now looking forward to our second visit this season to the Baker Stadium.

Our 'Annual' concert has been arranged for Tuesday 12 March 2002 in the Parish Hall. Tickets are available from Bowling Club members.

Winners of the ballot were;

  • Miss S Close, Dunadry
  • Mr S Laird, Nutts Corner
  • Mrs M Matthews, Muckamore
  • Mrs M Oliver, Londonderry

Many thanks to all who helped in these activities.

Scout Group News

We are having a busy and successful year so far with approximately 67 boys in the group. The leader situation has improved with the help of parents Alan Martin for Cubs and Emma Foster for Beavers taking warrants. The Scout leadership remains vacant and Scouts are meeting once per fortnight taken by present warranted leaders from the Group and District help. We are endeavouring to find a new Scout leader urgently.

Cubs are having a very successful year in competitions having won the Orienteering last weekend and coming third in another group. They have also been successful in Cub quizzes and Slot Car Racing (Scaletrix). Together with the Scouts we went to see the Belfast Giants last Tuesday and enjoyed a very good evening’s entertainment.

We now have 28 Beavers with a waiting list and 3 leaders and 2 helpers. Beavers also have a busy program with a swim night, a visit to W5 and Beaver Rally Day coming up.

Our annual Coffee Morning and Bring and Buy Sale will be on Saturday 23 March from 10.30 - 12.30 and donations and help would be greatly appreciated.

Junior Sunday School

Sunday School is now "rolling" towards Easter!! We shall be discussing Lent and finding out what its all about. We will be discovering what each person is giving up - but more importantly - will we be able to stick to our pledges?? An especially difficult task for young children!!

On 24 March the Children will take part in the Palm Sunday "procession of palms" and then Easter is upon us! We hope the Children enjoy their Easter Holidays.

Some useful dates for the diary:-
Sun 24 March Palm Sunday Normal Sunday School
Sun 31 March Easter Sunday No Sunday School
Sun 7 April All Age Worship No Sunday School
Sun 14 April No Sunday School
Sun 21 April Sunday School Resumes

Ladies Fellowship

The Ladies Fellowship continues to meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month in the Minor Hall at 8.00pm. Attendance has been very encouraging so far, however we would love the opportunity to welcome new members at any of our meetings.

In January we were given a very interesting and at times humorous talk on the "Great Houses of Belfast and their Families" by Roger Dixon. On 19 February we will be welcoming Rev. Ronnie McCracken who will be giving a talk on his work with the Messionic Society.

  • Friday 1 March

The Vikings are Coming!

As you know, we have a link with the Parish of Vasterviik in Sweden. A party of around 10-15 of their clergy and laypeople are coming to visit us over the Whit weekend in May (Friday 17th to Monday 20th). We intend to look after them just as well as they did us when we visited Sweden last year.

We are in the midst of planning an action-packed weekend for them, including at least one opportunity to meet as many of our parishioners as possible. Details will follow in due course. At this stage, however, I'm simply looking for volunteers to put up some of our guests for the three nights that they're here. This is a great opportunity to meet and learn from fellow Christians from another country, most of whom speak embarrassingly-good English!

If you feel able to help in this way, please call me on 028 9082 5955. Thank you.

The Internet - Bluetooth
www.templepatrick.connor.anglican.org

I thought that with the Vikings coming it would be nice to be able to talk with them about something different, so how about one of their ancient kings, Bluetooth. This may seem out of place in a column supposed to be about the Internet, which was not too apparent in 940AD.

King Harald Bluetooth, unlike most other Vikings it appears, preferred talking to fighting.
His diplomatic reign unified the nations of Denmark and Norway, which he then ruled from 940-981. He got his name Bluetooth because he liked blueberries so much that they stained his teeth.

The important thing is that he unified the communication between different nations, he got them talking to each other. For us to get devices to talk to each other means wires, lots of wires if your computer is anything like mine. (We could have a competition for the parishioner with the most wires coming out of their computer!)

But as the more mature readers will recall the radio used to be better known as the wireless. Communication happened without wires running from the transmitter to your home. So why not use this wire-less technology to remove the spaghetti from your workspace?

This is what Bluetooth does.

Based on a low-cost, short-range radio link, Bluetooth cuts the cords that used to tie up digital devices. When two Bluetooth equipped devices come within 10 meters range of each other, they can establish a connection together. Also because Bluetooth utilises a radio-based link, it doesn't require a line-of-sight connection in order to communicate. Your laptop could send information to a printer in the next room, or your microwave could send a message to your mobile phone telling you that your meal is ready. Gone will be the need to find the right cable, the right adapter and the right software to move data from one device to another. Instead, Bluetooth will let you shuffle data via wireless links as long as the devices are within 10 metres of each other.

In the future, Bluetooth is likely to be standard in tens of millions of mobile phones, PCs, laptops and a whole range of other electronic devices. The possibilities opened up really are limitless, and because the radio frequency used is globally available, Bluetooth can offer fast and secure access to wireless connectivity all over the world.

In Sweden, a trial is under way that turns a mobile phone into a train ticket. The trial lets those booking a ticket via the internet store the details on their mobile phone. When they take their seat in the train carriage a Bluetooth server interrogates the phone to find out if the commuter has the right ticket and is in the right seat.

The possibilities are countless.

So if you are looking for something to talk about to our Viking visitors, why not mention Bluetooth?
