From the Rector's Study

Dear Friends,

Comment

As we enter the month of June we are conscious of a number of events, among them, exams, Jubilee celebrations, the Sunday School Prize-giving on the first Sunday, the end of school and of course the holiday season. It is also of course a time of growth in gardens, fields, hedge rows and verges, but I hope too a time for re-creation and growth in each of our lives as well especially for those who might get away from the business of the daily round and the common task, to change gear and have a break.

The colour of the church season changes from the white of Easter to red at Pentecost and then green suggesting growth for the period after Trinity Sunday which takes in the whole of the summer and beyond. Nurtured by God's Spirit given at Pentecost we as members of the church are challenged to grow in holiness as we continue our christian pilgrimage, yes, even into the summer season.

I hope that during the summer when and if you are away that you might have the opportunity to experience worship in other churches. If you do I would be gald to receive any literature, magazines or worship material you may come across during your travels. If you are on holiday and away may I wish you a safe and pleasant journey there and back and refreshment of body and soul!

News from the Diocese
Not only are we being shepherded by a new 'pastor pastorem' in Bishop Alan Harper but our local Rural Dean, the Vicar of Antrim, the Rev. Dr Stephen McBride has been recently appointed Archdeacon of Connor. We extend our best wishes to him as he undertakes his new responsibilities.

Collaborative ministry
Perhaps you've come across the term before. It's almost the same as 'every-member-ministry' which recognises that each of us is called to minister in the church and for the world in particular ways. As members of the priesthood of all believers, the body of Christ, each of us is called to live a life of holiness in and through our baptism. This finds expression in diverse ways in the church.

Each of us has a ministry to offer, seen and often unseen, no matter how small. The Building for Generations project in the Diocese is trying to encourage this kind of participation with the backing of the Bishop. Helping each other, collaborative ministry is seen working itself out by using the gifts already present in worshipping communities and in particular with respect to increased lay ministry involvement and participation.

Following our Easter AGM in the Parish I have obtained episcopal permission for the following parishioners to assist with administering the chalice at Holy Communon as the need arises. In addition to Mr Jack McConnell whose assistance I greatly value, we also have Mrs Patricia MacKean, Mrs Molly Finlay and Mr Brian McMeekin. I thank them for agreeing to help out in this way.

Sympathy
At the recent funeral service in St John's, Donegore we bade farewell to Steven Smith of 2 Ballyhartfield Road, Templepatrick. We extend our deepest sympathy to Arlene, James, Gary and Cameron and the family circle in the loss of a son and brother. Steven was seventeen and had been working at the Landscape Centre at Donegore. Please continue to remember the family in your prayers as they come to terms with their loss.

Jubilee Celebrations
Writing shortly after the service to mark the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen in St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast, and with the encouragement of our Bishop and the Council of Churches of Britain and Ireland, the All Age Worship service incorporating the Sunday School Prize-giving will take a Jubilee theme as it falls on the weekend of the national Jubilee celebrations.

Ministry to the Sick
Ministry to the sick is offered to all in need with the laying on of hands and anointing with the oil of the sick. If you would like to know more about this ministry or indeed if you would like to receive it please speak to me in confidence.

Magazine Thanks
I am grateful to Mrs Gail McCoy for collaborating with myself in the production of this magazine and hopefully of subsequent issues too. Thank you Gail for your magazine ministry! Please remember that magazine contributions from all our organisations are most welcome and will no doubt help to enrich the final product. With organisations returning in September you may like to know that notes for the September-November issue are due to myself by 7th August. Thank you in anticipation!

Yours sincerely,
Stephen Fielding

Bowling Club
bowler.gif (1418 bytes)
Since the last Magazine we have had our second visit of the season to the Baker Stadium, 26 Members and Friends enjoyed two hours Bowling with a meal afterwards.

On Friday 3 May 2002, we had our AGM in the Minor Hall followed by election of officers and presentation of prizes. We then adjourned to the home of Catherine and Trevor Michael for Supper.

Our next outing has been arranged for Saturday 24 August 2002 to Dunluce Bowling Club, followed by a meal in the Causeway Hotel.

The club will re-open on Friday 6 September 2002 at 7.30 pm. New Members would be made most welcome, come along even if you have never bowled before and enjoy the fun and fellowship.

Isobel McCollam (Hon. Sec.)

St. John's Restoration News

You will recall that the Parish Statement of Accounts showed the deficit of the Restoration work to be reduced to £11,000. I am pleased to be able to report that, thanks in large part, to the efforts of Mrs Isobel McCollam and her team who organised the very successful Fashion Show, the deficit is now less than £10,000.

Thank you indeed to all who organised and supported the Fashion Show. Plans are also being made for a Summer Evening at Coleman's Nursery in July and the ever popular Treasure Hunt in August.

While our target is now clearly in sight there is still a little way to go. Should you wish to make a donation, may I remind you of the benefits of making a donation through the Gift Aid Envelopes available from the Church Wardens. Where Tax Payers make a Gift Aid Donation, the Parish is able to recover an additional 28% by way of a Tax Rebate.

Christopher Lundy (Chairman)

DONEGORE RESTORATION COMMITTEE

It is hoped to have a Scottish evening at Coleman's Garden Centre in late July
with Scottish dancing, Scottish food etc.
Details later.

Junior Sunday School

Our CMS Project this year was 'Choose Life', which focused on the Sudanese Refugees living in northern Uganda. This project is to help support the work of Canon Henry Leju and the Kajokeji Ecumenical Training Programme (KaETP). Its aim is to help Children and Young People in Ireland to become more aware of the situation in Sudan and to enable them to respond in ways that are not only appropriate, but also inspiring and relevant. Money raised by the 'Choose Life' Project will build a Community Centre that will be used by KaETP in HIV/AIDS training and outreach as they work amongst people attempting to rebuild their lives. It will cost £30,000 to build the centre and to continue the next phase of HIV/AIDS training. Each brick will cost 10 pence and the Centre will need almost 100,000 bricks. Your contributions will certainly make a huge difference to the people of Southern Sudan! Our thanks to the Children, Parents, Family and Friends for their generosity in supporting this worthy cause.

Once again our Sunday School year has come to an close. May we take this opportunity of thanking the Parents and Children for their support and attendance throughout the year. Have a great Summer holiday and we look forward to seeing everyone in September.

Vikings
came, saw, conquered gone
(but not forgotten)

May 17th to 20th saw the visit of a party of 19 members of our twin parish, Västerviik in Sweden, ranging in age from 12 to 70 something.

Despite a poor start to their trip, due to horrendous travel problems on the way over, they quickly entered into the spirit of the hectic schedule that had been arranged for them. Bushmills' Distillery, the Giants Causeway, Whitepark Bay, Carrick-a-Rede, the Glens of Antrim, Saul Church, Downpatrick Cathedral, Castle Ward, Strangford, Portaferry, Donegore, Forestside and Stormont all disappeared in a blur and we still had time for a party!! More importantly, they were able to take a full part in the Sunday Communion at St Patrick's, reading a lesson, playing the organ, singing and preaching. As those of you that were there will remember, I was an emotional wreck by the end of the service - Claes-Georg's singing was particularly moving.

I feel sure that the Swedes were almost as exhausted as their hosts by the time we dropped them back to the airport on Monday afternoon!

An invitation for us to return to Sweden is likely, so start saving now - more details in due course. In the meantime you can whet your appetite by looking at the beautiful book they brought us of the Swedish Archipelago. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped to look after them, especially my co-hosts.

Steve Laird

The Rector and Mr Stephen Laird extend their thanks to all who contributed to the successful weekend when we were visited by some 19 members of our link parish in Västervik, Sweden.

Safeguarding Trust

In accordance with the recommendations in 'Safeguarding Trust - The Church of Ireland Code of Good Practice for Ministry with Children', a Parish Panel has been appointed (operating since June 1998) to implement some of the responsibilities identified in the Code.

The Panels responsibilities include:

  • interviewing persons willing to serve as workers in the parish
  • advising workers on their responsibilities in respect of the Code
  • advising the Select Vestry in respect of its responsibilities
  • being an immediate contact point for workers when a suspicion, complaint or allegation of child abuse is made about a worker or on parish premises in accord with the procedures set out in these guidelines.

The Parish Panel Members are:-

The Rev. S A Fielding, Templepatrick
Mrs M Bell, Glengormley
Mr S Clendinning, Templepatrick
Mr M Cooke, Dunadry

Time to forget advances in technology and think of the better weather that lies ahead. Being well organised, any holidays are booked so I won't bother with resources to help that activity. But what about those sunny days at home, what is there to do?

A useful place to start is at the official website of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board. From here you can find things to see, activities, food and drink and aspects of culture. There are even video to watch.

Subtly different is the homepage of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board. You can discover, for example, 14 walks (although the detailed routes are not great they can act as inspiration) also details on birdwatching and fishing.

But how to get about and travel through the country? All will be revealed at here. You will find lots of information plus links to those timetables you may need.

Although it does not seem quite as popular as when I was younger, much younger, hostelling still provides a good way of staying in different part of the country, or other countries. You have to become a member but this then entitles you not only to stay in all Hostels belonging to H.I.N.I. but also over 5800 Hostelling International hostels in 64 different countries - and all at no extra membership charge! Details from their site.

If you are serious about walking, then where else to go but the Mournes? There are routecards available but the order form on the site doesn't work! However a phone call to the office on their site will provide them. (If you want to see them or need any help about routes please ask me.)

Perhaps the above is not to your taste and gardens are more your thing - but where to go and when? Help is at hand from the BBC at their site that even caters for the armchair gardener.

A final suggestion is for all those concerned with the environment. Details on outdoor activities, walks, fairs, exhibitions and even more can be obtained here.

The above should help provide you with enough ideas and information to enjoy, even more, the countryside that we have around us.

Alan Walbridge

The Concept of Jubilee

The concept of Jubilee is a Biblical one. In Leviticus 25.8 onwards we read 'Count off seven Sabbaths of years - seven times seven years - so that the seven Sabbaths of years amount to a period of forty-nine years. Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land. Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee to you.'

The Book of Leviticus goes on to advocate the return of land to the rightful owners and the freeing of slaves in the Jubilee year. Whether this ever happened in ancient Israel is disputed. The concept, however, lay behind the recent successful Jubilee Campaign to free developing countries from international debt.

In her Golden Jubilee year The Queen has asked that those who wish to be generous might consider making a donation to one of the following charities: Barnardo's, Cruse Bereavement Care, I-CAN (helps children communicate), Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (who have fund sharing arrangements with the Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Society), SSAFA Forces Help, British Commonwealth Ex-Services League, Jubilee Appeal for Commonwealth Veterans.
