Dear Friends,

Here's hoping September finds you refreshed and looking forward to another organisational year in the parish. Thank you to all who brought me service sheets and parish magazines from other arts and parts. This autumn there are a number of events that are taking place in addition to our usual parish activities.

Rural Deanery
I would like to draw your attention to a Diocesan 'Building for Generations' Youth Ministry initiative. This is being organised on a Rural Deanery basis and will involve a Youth Forum event on October 1. The incumbent of each parish including one representative form the Select Vestry, one youth leader and one young person between the ages of 14 and 25 years will attend the function under the chair of the Rural Dean. The Forum will be exploring the needs and practical solutions for assisting parishes in youth ministry. The challenge is to design a response that fits the needs and opportunities experienced locally. Please remember all involved in the planning and organisation of this important event in your prayers. In connection with this we will be having a BFG Youth Sunday at All Age Worship on the 3rd November in which it is hoped to have young people play a significant part in the worship that day. This gives a spiritual focus to the work of the Rural Deanery Youth Forum. Congratulations are extended to Rev. Colin Hall-Thompson of Kilbride Parish on being appointed the new Rural Dean following Dr Stephen McBride's elevation to the archdiaconate! The third annual Rural Deanery Songs of Praise will take place on 3rd November at 7.00pm in St Jude's Church, Muckamore. All are invited and encouraged to come along and enjoy the fellowship of members in the wider church in our area.

Notification
I would be grateful for any notification of serious illness in the Parish and for information regarding the admission and discharge of parishioners from hospital. Please note that if you happen to have moved house or are planning to do so, a note with the change of address and telephone number on it would be much appreciated.

Creche, Sunday School & Confirmation
Creche resumes once again on the second Sunday in September as does Sunday School. The first Sunday in the month throughout the year is a day on which Sunday School members and teachers can be present for the whole of the service. This service involves teaching through the address and seeks to involve our young people more actively in the worshipping life of the community of the faithful. It is a shorter service than most and for those who are reluctant to have very young children in church for the whole of a service let me encourage you to come along to this service, which is a little less formal, and be assured of a welcoming and accepting atmosphere. With regard to Confirmation there will be classes some time in the coming months for those who are eligible. An announcement will be made in due course as soon as more information is made available to me.

New Term, new school, new horizons
Let's send good wishes and every blessing to the children and young people from our parish who are starting school for the first time or moving to secondary level education. Starting in Year 1 at 'big school' we think of Andrew, Anna, Ben, Christopher, Mia and Zoe.

Yours sincerely,
Stephen Fielding

Bowling Club

T
he Bowling Club will re-open on Friday 6 September 2002, at 7.30 pm and on Monday evenings from 8.00 pm to 9.30 pm.

On Saturday 24 August 2002, we had our 'Annual' outing to Dunluce Outdoor Bowling Club by coach, stopping on the way for afternoon tea and coffee at the holiday home of Amy and Reggie Montgomery. Our Thanks to them for a lovely start to our afternoon. After bowling we had our meal in the Causeway Hotel.

Plans are afoot for our trip back to Westport in September, which had proved very popular last year.

New Members would be made most welcome, come along and enjoy the friendly fellowship.

Isobel McCollam (Hon. Sec.)

St. John's Restoration News

Scottish fare, dancing and yarns were the ingredients of a very enjoyable evening at Coleman's Nursery in July.

This was a change from previous evenings and was very well received by all present. Our thanks go to Ruth and Ronnie Barnes for their enthusiastic support. Sincere thanks and appreciation also go to all who so generously supported, arranged and assisted at the evening. Over £700 was raised, reducing the deficit to just over £8,000 and, as I write we look forward to the Treasure Hunt on Friday 23 August 2002.

Recent months have seen the deficit steadily falling, which gives us encouragement that our task is almost complete. There is, however, still a little way to go and I hope to be able to reveal more of our plans in the next edition of the Parish Magazine.

Scout Group News

A new year of Scouting is about to begin with many exciting changes taking place in the movement. The most noticeable of these is the introduction of a new section named Explorer Scouts, ranging from ages 14 - 18. This section will operate at District level, hopefully for us at Muckamore. We will continue to have Scouts from 10½ - 15 years max and at present with no Scout Leaders!

Other changes involve programs and awards, with the sections and age ranges pretty much as before. As GSL (Group Scout Leader) last year, I was faced with a serious shortage of Leaders, and ended up as acting Scout Leader, Beaver Leader and Squirrel Leader, a mammoth task and one which cannot be repeated this year.

If a Scout Leader cannot be found, almost immediately, we may reluctantly have to consider sending our troop to join Muckamore.

Beavers need at least one other Warranted Leader and Squirrels 2 Leaders. Whilst we are very fortunate having Parents willing to help with meetings and transport, which is very necessary to cover our adult/child supervision ratio, it is the Leaders who are trained to run the sections. Leadership can be very rewarding both in working with the boys, and the fellowship found in Scouting.

Scout Network is a new section for ages 18 - 25, and the opportunities afforded to young people through leadership and the network are immense. I have an information video on the entire Scout movement and the new changes taking place, which I will lend to anyone interested.

Please think about what you could do to help your Group. Today everyone is a 'busy' person, but the Youth Leaders are genuinely the busiest people I know, before they volunteered. How busy are you?

My belated thanks go to all those who helped in any way last year, especially to our Leaders for their loyal service and commitment.

A special thanks to Normal Shirley who arranged our visit to Greenmount, where we enjoyed a very successful Treasure Hunt and BBQ for all the families to finish the year.

I look forward to yet another successful year in Scouting.

Catherine Michael (G.S.L.)

Junior Sunday School
G R E E T I N G S! to all Children who are attending Junior Sunday School this year. Whether you are a familiar or new face - everyone is most welcome!

We have lots of exciting things to do over the next few months, not least our participation in the Christmas play, but we can't give too much away. All will be revealed on Sunday 8 December 2002, so make sure you keep this date free in your diary!!

May we take this opportunity to thank the parents in advance for their continued help and support, it is greatly appreciated.

.Gail & Emma

Ladies Fellowship

The Ladies' Fellowship will commence on Tuesday 17 September 2002 with a short service and communion in St Patrrick's Church at 8 o'clock followed by supper in the Choir rooms.

The Ladies meet on the third Tuesday of the month and we extend a warm welcome to members old and new to join us in our fellowship with one another.

Eileen Smyth is our President for the next two years and with the help of her committee has arranged a varied programme which we hope will result in enjoyment and friendship and of course "a wee cup of tea" before we go home.

One date we would like to highlight is Tuesday 19 November 2002 when we have arranged a concert, which will be performed by the Youth Choir of Glengormley Methodist Church with soloist Karen Scarlett. This promises to be a concert with a difference!! Come along and bring the family for an enjoyable evening.

The harvest is on Sunday 6 October 2002 and we will be providing lunch as usual after the service. Any offers to help with catering will be gladly accepted - Tel 9443 2533. Please join us for a "bite to eat" and a chat, everyone welcome.

Another date is Tuesday 15 October 2002 when we will be having Mrs Elizabeth Pollock to talk about "TRADECRAFT" and she will be bringing along some goods from third world countries. Tradecraft supports these goods because the suppliers pay their workers a fair wage for a day's work.

There will be an update of our programme in the next issue.

The Mobile Internet - WAP
www.templepatrick.connor.anglican.org

One of the nice things about travelling is the uninterrupted time it gives to read a book. Unfortunately the information locked in the print of a book is no longer good enough for many who need their daily fix from the web. Most of us receive our web information over the telephone network so if our domestic phone were to be replaced by a mobile phone then we should be able to make our connection and surf away. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, this is not yet the case.

WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is designed to allow mobile devices access and communicate with the Internet and is the closest thing to mobile Internet access that is currently available. However WAP is not the mobile Internet and should never have been described as such - this lead to widespread disappointment in the market and a lot of negative feeling towards the idea of mobile Internet connectivity.

WAP does not allow devices to access standard web sites, but only pages that have been written in a special language WML (Wireless Markup Language). So, you can't use a WAP phone to access all of the sites that you use from your desktop computer, not even the Parish website.

You also have to dial in every time you want access and connection speeds are very low - currently about 9 kbits per second (kbps). So WAP is slow, about 31-41 min to download a 3min song, difficult to use and not very appealing to the mass market.

So is there something better on the horizon? Indeed there is and you can learn all about it in time for your Christmas wish list by reading the next Parish Magazine.
